Trying sushi for the first time. Foodies help!
Posted on: 04 Apr 2016

Any dos and don'ts? I'm little nervous about the raw fish part. Are there any cooked varieties that I can start out with maybe? Any help would be appreciated.

I grew up on sashimi (just raw fish, no rice or rolls) I am not a huge fan of roles but I think it would be a good place to start for someone just trying it. Some rolls even come with cooked fish. If I do eat rolls I do go for spicy ones but I mostly eat salmon sashimi.

Slowly, I realized that eating different foods makes you feel so much better and much more braver. Good luck with your sushi!

There are also Baked Rolls. My wife not a fan of raw fish. Took her to Little Mad Fish and she loved the Baked Rolls and the Deep Fried ones to. I suggest not to mix much between the two though. And go with a fish you like. Search for sushi places in your area and check the menu for these types. They are very good. Enjoy!

Make sure place uses very fresh fish. Try all new raw in rolls. The raw texture takes getting use to, don't just go to raw pieces on first visit. Use Wasabi and soy mixture for dipping. That mixture is what made me love sushi. Be careful start a little Wasabi at a time, slowly add until your happy with heat.

Try the crunch rolls first. They are delicious. Crabs and shrimps will be the safer option for first timers. Some of the rolls also have spicy meyo which will neutralize the fishy taste. Fresh Sushi is great and I am sure you will be coming back for more. Go easy on the Wasabi. Enjoy!

Sure! You are not alone. I felt the same when I first tried it. In fact I used to cringe at the idea of sea food. First rule you gottu find a authentic place not a cheap roll do it all place. Second good sushi is not cheap so be ready to spend some. Third start with tasty rolls like rainbow roll our something like spicy tuna roll and then sushi. Fourth add some sake. Alcohol makes everything palatable and you more adventurous. Don't start with sashimi right away. Finally easy on wasabi. Enjoy!

There are vegetarian, cooked as well as raw seafood rolls. I would suggest not to try sashimi as a first timer. Try maki rolls :) mix very little wasabi with soya sauce and ginger shavings, using fork or chopsticks, dip each piece into the mix and eat ;) either u will love it or hate it!! Nothing in between !!!

Enjoy your first sushi!!!All the best wishes :)
